FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a protocol that allows the transfer of files across the internet. All Webconexion.net hosting accounts come with an FTP account that allows you to upload files to your web site.
How do I configure my FTP access?
In order to start using FTP, you need to decide on which FTP software to use. You can choose to upload using DOS FTP or you may opt for a more graphical interface such as WS_FTP or CuteFTP. We have compiled a configuration example below using WS_FTP.
WS_FTP Example
If you don't yet have WS_FTP installed, please visit www.ipswitch.com to download it. Install WS_FTP once it has downloaded.
Open WS_FTP. You will be presented with a Session Properties dialogue box. This box allows you to configure your FTP access to as many remote computers as you want.
Click the New button to start creating our FTP account. All boxes will blank out ready to receive our data.
Enter a friendly name for this FTP account into the Profile Name box. For example, you could set this as 'My Webconexion.net Account'.
Now enter your hostname () into the Host Name/Address box. this tells WS_FTP which server to connect to.
Enter you accounts username and password into the User ID and Password fields then click the Save Pwd box. If other people are likely to use your PC, it is recommended that you don't click the Save Pwd box.
Add the account by clicking Apply and then OK. WS_FTP will now try and connect to the account. If you are not connected to the internet, the main WS_FTP window will appear displaying error messages detailing a failed connection. If this happens, connect to the internet then click the Connect button. WS_FTP will now login to your account.
How do I transfer files?
The main WS_FTP program consists of 2 file lists. The left list displays files on you local drive(s) while the other list contains files on your account.
To transfer a file from your PC to the remote computer select the file from the left list and then click the --> button. The file will then transfer to the remote computer.
To transfer a file from the remote computer to your PC select the file from the right list and then click the <-- button. The The file will then transfer to your PC.
Ensure that you select the correct transfer mode.
